NEW UNDERGROUND BAND,
GIVENSIX, GIVES SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE
Givensix looms on the horizon
preparing to charge head first at the music industry.
Givensix stretches the haphazard label of modern
rock with a sound that at times is hard-hitting,
funky, and pensive but always genre bending and
eclectic. Residing in a small town you’ve
never heard of just south of Flint Michigan, Givensix
features Jason Cole on Guitar, Jamie Taylor on vocals,
Zach Thomas on bass, and Eric Cole on drums. Self-proclaimed
students of the craft, Givensix sets out to prove
that thought and modern music doesn’t have
to be a water in oil effect.
Having distributed 5,500 copies
of their debut self-titled EP in the first year
of its release, Givensix announces its second EP,
Caliber. This time the boys relied on close friend
Ryan Darnell of Even the Odd to capture their sound
in his home recording studio. Caliber exhibits a
rawer more live sound conceptually darker and more
mature than the first. Ultimately, this album is
reflective of the band’s closer bond and displays
their growth as artists individually and collectively.
The full track listing for Caliber, includes “these
six things”, “silent car”, “framework”,
and features the first hit released from the CD,
“Plan B”. With over 4,500 downloads
from the Givensix web site, Caliber promises to
create an even bigger buzz.
Givensix continues to gain attention
and loyal fans throughout the Metro Detroit, Flint,
and Chicago areas. Reaching wider audiences, Givensix
has been spotlighted on Lansing, MI radio 92.1 The
Edge and most recently Detroit’s 101.1 WRIF.
In addition several Internet radio stations have
Givensix songs available including www.newartistradio.net
and www.hotbands.com. Givensix has also seen wide
spread exposure as a featured artist of the week
on the file sharing program Imesh which has several
million members worldwide. Still the best way to
get the full Givensix experience is to catch one
of their many live shows. Packing all the hot spot
clubs, the band continues to spread the buzz throughout
Metro Detroit and the Midwest. You can be sure when
Givensix comes to your town you’ll be giving
them a ten!
Jason
Cole Starting on
guitar at the age of 12, Jason early off realized
he had the ability to write and create songs. Taking
private lessons and participating in the National
Guitar Summer Workshop directed the intense self
teaching necessary to give sonic birth to the arrangements
in his head. Naturally, Jason and younger brother
Eric jammed together for most of their early years.
Jason played in several bands with Eric but parted
ways in 1996 to form the rock group Fallacy. In
1999 Jason went professional and was hired as the
lead guitarist for the hardcore hip-hop band Innercorse.
Jason remained with Innercorse throughout the band’s
signing with Madonna’s Maverick Records. Not
satisfied with the creative and business roles he
had in the band, Jason later left Innercorse on
friendly terms to pursue his own musical interests.
Completely free to unleash his full creative potential,
Jason got back together with his brother Eric to
form the foundation of Givensix. Now wiser about
the music industry, Jason is majoring in music business
to help guide Givensix straight to the top.
Jamie
Taylor Jamie became
interested in music and song writing at an early
age. Exploring music from all angles, Jamie studied
guitar, bass, drums, clarinet, and saxophone. In
his quest for more and more sounds, Jamie tackled
the digital realm of music producing two industrial
/ techno CDs of original creations. It wasn’t
until he became a member of the Goodrich High School
Choir that Jamie realized his favorite instrument
was his own voice. As the lead singer and front
man of the bands Antibody and thieves, Jamie honed
his vocal skills as well as his song writing ability.
Seeking to delve deeper into the music industry,
Jamie organized and performed in two large scale
rock shows in an effort to promote local Davison
/ Goodrich area rock bands. Currently a University
of Michigan music major, he continues to broaden
his horizons while challenging his vocal ability.
Jamie sees Givensix as a creative outlet that allows
him to truly utilize the skills and talents he has
developed
Zach Thomas
Starting on bass at the age of ten, Zach already
has the formal training and experience of a pro.
Given his first electric bass and amp by his Uncle
Roy, Zach was inspired to take lessons from various
private teachers. Participation in the Rochester
Adams High School and Oakland University Jazz bands
has helped Zach develop his talent on the bass.
These experiences have earned him such honors as
the Outstanding Musician of the 1999 Waterford Jazz
Festival and the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award at Rochester
Adams. Zach also studied Jazz and Classical string
bass for four years. In 1999 Zach was personally
invited to audition for Rich Appleman, head of the
bass department at Berklee College of Music. In
addition to his formal training Zach has played
bass for the bands Gage and Explicit Noise. Zach
met guitarist Jason Cole at a music class on the
campus of O.C.C. and soon after became the funkified
four string wizard of Givensix.
Eric Cole
Eric began playing drums at the age of nine. Studying
under private percussion instructor Hans Muer for
eight years, Eric became well versed in a variety
of styles. In addition to private lessons he also
participated in workshops and clinics such as the
Cranbrook Jazz Ensemble and National Guitar Summer
Workshop’s Drum Program. In 1998 Eric was
hired as a private drum instructor for Pontiac Music
and Sound. Eric has jammed in local bands with brother
Jason for most of his career, but the two took a
brief hiatus when Jason was hired as the guitarist
for Innercorse. When Jason left Innercorse the two
immediately started playing and writing together
what would become the foundation of several Givensix
songs. In additon to Givensix, Eric also plays as
a “drummer-for-hire” in the American
Federation of Musicians Union, Local 784 and is
a drummer for the University of Detroit Mercy Titan
Pep Band.
